Seo and LSI

SEO and LSI.

What is SEO and LSI? Why are they important in Pillar 2 of the Internet Business Training Program?

SEO is also know as Search Engine Optimization. It is a method of understanding how pages are ranked on Google and the various search engines.

Wikipedia defines SEO as “Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a website web presence.”

Increasing your web presence is the goal of your website. Many people have no idea about how to put together an internet marketing strategy utilizing SEO. They think a pretty site is all they need or if they just rank for their company name that is good enough. Unfortunately unless you are Pepsi or Coke, ranking for the name of your company is NOT how people search for you.

SEO is not a short term approach. It is a long term consistant strategy that incorporates many aspects to get your website ranked for many searched terms. It all starts in the website building process and within Pillar 2 of the 4 Pillars of Internet Business Training Success. This is why Pillar one is focused on market research and keyword development to better understand how people search and how they may find you on the internet. As wikepedia defines it, it is a process. This process starts BEFORE you build your website and continues for the entire time your website in on the internet. It does get easier as your site builds rank and age, but when you start out, SEO is a laborious process that incudes proper content development and the marketing in of that content to build backlinks and traffic to your website.

So what is LSI and how does it relate to SEO in Pillar 2?

LSI is know as Latent Semantic Indexing. It is the attempt of the search engines, in particular Google, to emmulate how the human mind thinks and to be able to understand language and how it is used.

I always like to help people better understand this complex term by using a simple explanation. I would like you to think to yourself, when I say the word “Tiger”..whats the first thing that comes to your mind? What do you think of when you hear the word Tiger?

Due to the complexities of the English language, LSI or Latent semantic indexing utilzing complex alogrythms to better understand the relationship of words and how they interact together.

Back to Tiger… Tiger could mean the animal, or Tony the Tiger from my beloved Frosted Flakes that I so loved to eat as a child, or it could even mean Tiger Woods, the famous golfer.

So how is a robot spider that attempts to rank your content appropriately know which word means what and the relationship to other words on the page?

Back in 2003, Google bought a company that was developing a program that would be able to interpret content on a page and figure it out based on other words on the page. Google originally bought this company for their Google Adwords Paid advertising model to better improve ads that would be showed based on people’s search.

Well over the years, this technology has been improved to the point where when a spider (search engine robot) comes and crawls your page, it can based on the other phrases on the page, understand WHICH Tiger you are talking about. It is trying to emmulate the human brain as Google improves its ability to serve up the right search based on what is searched.

From Wikipedia, the definition of LSI is – “Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is an indexing and retrieval method that uses a mathematical technique called Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to identify patterns in the relationships between the terms and concepts contained in an unstructured collection of text. LSI is based on the principle that words that are used in the same contexts tend to have similar meanings. A key feature of LSI is its ability to extract the conceptual content of a body of text by establishing associations between those terms that occur in similar contexts.”

By combining the concepts of LSI with SEO, you can build very powerful content if you understand how they work together. Within the Internet Business Training Program is a full length webinar I did on explaining how these to work together. It is critical when you are in the 2nd pillar to Internet marketing training that you understand the importance of developing your content with very specific guidelines based on both SEO and LSI.
